How to Install a French Drain in Waxahachie Clay

Short answer: to install a french drain you plan the route from the wet area to a lower outlet, call 811, dig a trench at a steady one percent slope, line it with geotextile fabric, bed washed gravel, lay perforated pipe in the collection zone and solid pipe on the run to the outlet, cover with more washed gravel, fold the fabric over the top, and backfill. Before anything else: find the outlet

A french drain does not make water disappear. It moves water from one place to a lower place. If you cannot point at the spot where the water will come out, you do not have a drain plan yet, you have a trench plan. Walk the lot after a real rain and look for the lowest usable point: a back corner that already drains, a swale between houses, a ditch line, or a curb where a pop up emitter can sit. Materials

  • Solid pipe for the conveyance run to the outlet, plus couplings, wyes and elbows
  • Cleanout risers at the upstream end and at direction changes
  • Pop up emitter or grated outlet, and sod or seed for restoration

Step by step

1. Mark the line

Paint the trench centerline from the wettest part of the problem area to the outlet. Keep curves gentle and use fittings rather than kinking pipe. Mark where the drain will pick up downspouts or a catch basin so you can plan the tie ins before the trench is open.

2. Dig to a consistent slope

Set a string line at your target grade and dig to it, checking as you go. About one percent is the target. Blackland clay digs in two unhelpful moods: sticky enough to pack a trencher chain when wet, and hard enough to bounce a trencher when dry. Neither is a reason to accept an uneven trench bottom. Clean the bottom by hand so it is smooth and continuously falling, with no bellies.

3. Line the trench with fabric

Lay non woven geotextile fabric into the trench with enough excess on both sides to fold over the finished gravel later. The fabric is the part that keeps clay fines out of your gravel. On Blackland clay it is not optional. Overlap seams generously.

4. Bed gravel, then set pipe

Put down two to three inches of washed gravel and rake it to match your slope. Lay perforated pipe on that bed through the collection zone, holes down or per the manufacturer, so water entering the gravel can get into the pipe at the lowest point. Once you are past the wet area, transition to solid pipe for the run to the outlet.

5. Cover with washed gravel and fold the fabric

Surround and cover the pipe with more washed gravel, typically to within a few inches of grade for a lawn drain. Then fold the fabric flaps over the top of the gravel so the gravel is fully wrapped. This burrito wrap is what keeps the drain working years from now.

6. Backfill and restore

Cap with a few inches of soil and sod, or bring the gravel to the surface if you want a visible drain rock line. Set cleanout risers flush and keep the outlet clear and visible. Water the trench line and expect to top dress once or twice as it settles.

Mistakes that ruin homeowner installs

  • No slope. A level trench is a buried puddle. Sediment settles in the flat spots and the drain slowly stops moving water.
  • No fabric. Without a filter, clay fines migrate into the voids and the gravel turns into mud within a season or two.
  • Dirty gravel. Crusher run or unwashed rock has fines baked in. Use washed, angular drainage gravel only.
  • Perforated pipe all the way to the outlet. Past the wet area, holes just dump collected water back into the ground you were trying to dry out.

When not to do this yourself

How deep should a french drain be on Blackland clay?

A lawn drain pulling water out of a soggy area is usually 18 to 24 inches deep. A drain protecting a slab foundation is usually 30 to 42 inches so it sits below the wetted zone against the beam. Depth is driven by where the water is and how much fall you have to the outlet.
